You will usually know if you have a blocked drain because your waste will stop going away when you flush the toilet. There may also probably be a smell.

There are numerous reasons for drains to clog-up - these are the top 4:

1. Drains may block because they are in poor physical condition and normal contents are not being cleared.

2. They may be in satisfactory condition but have been abused by flushing away items such as plastic bags, or other disposable, non-flushable items.

3. Excessive disposal of cooking fats and oils, along with other domestic by-products can cause blockage of the pipe work.

4. Tree roots entering a broken drain can also be a problem. See photos below.
